So I’m having cable issues tonight and I decided to rant about something I’ve been thinking of… Why do I have to pay for 900+ channels in a menu where only about 300 (maybe) are even accessible without paying MORE and only about 50 (MAX) are in HD. Of those I count about 36 channels that I’ve EVER watched and those are all only in the HD range. Question I have is… Why can’t I just pay for the channels I want? Why can I only buy packages of shit that I never watch or don’t ever utilize… And they separate popular channels into different packages so you’d have to buy multiple ones. grrr

Think of the music industry… they’re struggling with the fact that people don’t want to pay $20+ for a disc full of music when they only listen to a song or two. iTunes exists where you can buy individual songs (among tons of other ways to get music by the song) and has the music industry died? no.. Those fat suits aren’t clearing their billion dollar checks anymore but the artists aren’t suffering. Now the movie industry is dealing with this… Warner brothers starting to cut-off RedBox and NetFlix and not allow them to get new rentals for another 30+ days?…. unreal; when the fuck will the old school suits get it? When can I get Star Wars 6-disc in Blu-ray? How about Lord of the Rings Blu-ray? Nope… still waiting for that shit.

This post is ill-researched but that’s the point of this ‘newsbite’ style posterous blog… I just talk. If you need the evidence use google, this stuff isn’t a secret. I’m not getting paid to say this either so fuck you FCC and your new blogger disclosure rules… and with that I’m out, to watch my pixelated HD with in-and-out sound and abnormally slow internet tonight… until they fix it and say nothing was wrong.

Here’s an idea…. don’t treat people in your industry like shit because you think you are/were “on top” - the industry changes and work fluctuates - when one day you’re struggling to keep the lights on be wise as to who you ask for help as you may have burned the bridge in the past. This isn’t aimed at anybody in particular as I’ve seen it happen over and over again, but I’m just sayin… don’t burn bridges because you never know when you’ll need one.

People need to tinker more with web sites and software… play with the options… look for buttons, menus, etc… before calling your tech friends / family members.

Back in the early days us tech guys had a common thing we all said - RTFM (Read The Fucking Manual). Since there rarely is a manual these days with software and especially with web sites there’s an amazing web site with tons of information that has replaced all of that. I’ll give you a second to grab a pen and paper to write this down.

There will be a box that you can type things into… like questions… the same question you bug your tech friends with… just type it in… 85% of the time it works every time!

Because this is still hard for people there’s great flowchart by a great online comic that you can print and tape on your 1996 series monitor.Glad I could help.

It’s obvious to me that a vast majority of people on Facebook either don’t understand the “hide” function or are completely oblivious to the fact it’s even there. It’s an active filter that shows up on the right as a button when you hover a message on the news feed. If you click the button it’ll ask you if you want to hide that person’s updates or if you’d like to hide all messages from the app that sent the message… It’s extremely useful. I’ve hidden certain people’s updates that I’m not particularly fond of and I’ve especially hidden (blocked mostly but for the purposes of this post) most apps; all the mafia wars shit, those “xxxx answered questions about you”, ninjas v pirates, etc etc… Just hide em and you can stay connected to your friends w/o removing them and killing any future conversation you may want to have with them… I don’t care if my friends want to play mafia wars or answer questions about their friends but I don’t want to read the 29834723 messages it sends out to join their mafia or take this survey… just hide them (or block the apps completely).

Facebook isn’t stupid because of the apps people use send messages to your wall… you’re stupid for complaining while not understanding how to use the tools that facebook gives you.
